NOT ALL WAXES ARE CREATED EQUAL& A TRAY TABLE

I FINALLY got down in the basement studio and got to work on some pieces that have been hanging out down there for a long time. I have decided I am not going to go looking for more until I clean out what I already have. I have to admit, some of those things down there are just not speaking to me...

One of them was a child's rocker that I picked up for 3 bucks about a year ago. I had originally painted it pink and tried to hand paint a bird and branches on it. That went oh so bad. When I got my chalk paint, I was excited I could just whip right over it and start over. Today, I painted it old white and used some Paris grey to paint the word BEBE' on the top. It looked so cute! I had spent way too many hours on this piece already. After distressing the pieces and making the lettering look nice and worn, it was time for a clear coat of wax. I have not gotten around to buying the Hennants wax yet and my Johnson's Paste Wax, all of a sudden, has a terrible petroleum odor. I pulled out some clear Briwax thinking it would be just as good. AAAAAAHHHHHH! All I wanted to do was scream! You have GOT to be kidding me.... As soon as I started waxing, the paint started lifting off!! The pink was bleeding through and I could see my bad paint job from before! Sheesh. What to do now. The wax was on good, I couldn't paint over it, so I tried to cover over it with dark wax. BOMB again! It looked totally, nasty dirty. I have given this 3 dollar gem too much attention. It took up the majority of my day so it is now in the good will pile for someone else to give it a try! Moral of this tragedy....Don't use Briwax on a painted surface. I thought I would pass this along to keep you guys from making the same mistake.


So, the day wasn't a total loss, I painted a really cool lamp and I finished this 8.00 tray table I nabbed at a yard sale last week. My original intention was to take it to the shop tomorrow but after I got it upstairs to give it a proper photo shoot, I fell in LOVE with it. I am in the middle of finishing up my family room and this little piece was the perfect portable size.



It folds up for easy storage and can also be used as  a serving tray.
 I used chalk paint for this one. I coated it with old white followed by Paris gray. I distressed all the way through the wood, revealing some of the white and the wood. After I distressed it, I applied a light coat of dark TLC wax.
 The family room is coming along! This is my new slip covered, ROWE and ROBIN BRUCE furniture from Barnett Furniture in Trussville, Alabama. I can just pull the covers off and throw them in the wash!
