After much deliberation, my friend Karen at Redoux and my friend and Annie Sloan Stockist, Staci have convinced me I must explore the possibilities of contract work. For years I have turned this down, strictly because of this character flaw that I struggle with that makes me a "people pleaser." I cannot stand conflict, AT ALL. I have had a lack of confidence in my abilities, yet I have been painting furniture since the early 90's when Rachel Ashwell so brilliantly marketed the "shabby chic" look. I have painted with many different kinds of paints and used so many different techniques, I can't keep up with them all. I even have a great "black finish" using fire retardant spray paint for grills. I know right? It's beautiful though. I will have to share that another time.
Anyway. I've painted other people's furniture before but never made it a steady part of my income. It's time to admit to myself, I am good at what I do:) Today, I went to my friend Doran's house to look at some pieces she wanted me to update for her. If we can work out the details I will be overhauling this gorgeous china cabinet with metal accents and a matching dresser, bed and armoire from the same set.

Doran didn't let me walk away without some delicious veggies from her garden.....

ReplyDeleteIt looks like it is time for the next step. Remember that God has not given us a spirit of timidity...! Special furniture commissions could be just what you should do!
ReplyDeleteOoohhhh, I can't wait to see how that piece looks in Paris Grey!! I don't like doing commission pieces either, but I need to get my little fledgling shop out of the red!!
ReplyDeleteHope the tomatoes were as yummy as they look!
You GO girl!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing the finished product. And good for you for starting on contract jobs.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean though - doing this work, specifically, for someone else makes me nervous too. But you're right you totally have the skills and experience.
What a lovely piece of furniture to begin your new endeavor! I'm glad to see you putting your wonderful talent to work....making some $$ doing something you enjoy, at your pace.....it's a win win for you and your clients! Just because you are a people pleaser you will go that extra mile in your work and you will end up with a long waiting list. Just don't let it take over your whole life darlin', don't forget the all work no play idea, it's accurate far as I can tell. Best of luck to you in your new adventure!
ReplyDeleteTake care, VBg
Yay!!! Kelli it will turn out gorgeous, and your phone will be ringing off the hook once the secret is out that you are painting for contract work. Lucky girl, I LOVE it when clients give me something yummy. The best I have received was a bottle of Olive Oil from a client's friend's family Olive Orchard, and a whole Sushi making set from another happy client. (I haven't tried out the Sushi set yet, I love to eat it, but am hesitant to make it....) Can't wait to see the finisehd product!
