If at first you don't succeed......

WHEW! Yesterday was a whirlwind. After we worked at VBS we took the girls over to Dauphin Island to ride the ferry over to Fort Morgan and Gulf Shores. I have been to Dauphin Island many times and have always wanted to see how they accomplish getting so many cars across the bay. It was pretty cool. We drove right up onto the ship,  parked,  and got out to enjoy the cruise on the observation deck. It took us across the Bay, eliminating about an hour off of our drive. I finally got to put my toes in the sand, for a few minutes anyway, and was able to enjoy some seafood at the Crab Trap as well. We got back to the hotel around eleven with my littlest one in my arms, completely zonked from all of the excitement. It's 9:00 a.m. and she just now woke up. The hubs went back to VBS to do a wrap up service and I stayed behind with the kids so they could sleep in.  Honesty, that was a selfish move. It will make for a much more pleasant trip home in a few hours with well rested kids.
Before I left, I shared with you that I finished up a few side tables to bring along and talk about. One of them being this solid oak table that I found for a song at the thrift store.  Sometimes I get "bright" ideas in my head about a piece and they don't go over as well as they did in my head. No pun intended. This side table was one of them. I had just gotten back from a trip to market and all of the hot colors for summer were bright orange, turquoise and green.  So I opted for the bright, glossy orange.  One piece of advice when selling furniture, if you want it to move quickly, is to choose colors that are more neutral in color, appealing to a broader audience. It wasn't that my table was ugly, it was actually really cute. I had seen one in a cottage magazine with a piece of turquoise pottery sitting on it, a big ben clock and a nickel silver task lamp. It was adorable. However, this table sat and sat and sat, so I finally decided to bring it home and re paint it.

The fabulous thing about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is that I was able to paint right over oil based spray paint with no priming or sanding.  I whipped out my favorite gray and white and slapped it on. I had to wax it at the end with a dark wax because I could not distress this piece as I would have wanted too. The orange coming through would have not been pleasant. I did the wax on wax off technique. When I get home, I am going to attempt my first Vlog to show you how easy this is and what a huge difference it makes.
