REMEMBER THIS?? I can finally say I am DONE! This big girl gave me a run for my money but she was worth every last ounce of sanding, scrubing, painting and sanding some more! If you didn't read my first post, this buffet has a pretty great story behind it:) Here is the link to that post if you want to go back and get it's history.
Now Here is what she looks like now!!
Look at this hardware! I didn't have to do anything to it. It just has that perfect oil rubbed bronze look from age.
So here is how I did it. Some of you know from my previous post that this buffet had a bad leg. My first task was to use the sander to round out the legs and make them both look the same. That took about a day to perfect. Then I wiped it down with a deglosser and cleaned it really good. It was REALLY dirty. I think I ruined the back of my moms car getting it home because the dirt ground itself into the carpet in places the blanket wasn't spread out correctly. It's still not clean! Then I primed it with a brush on primer using 123 water clean up Zinzer. This was a bad mistake! It would not set! SO I had to sand and strip ALL of that off and spray prime it with the oil based 123 zinzer. NOW, I hate nothing more than to see a beautiful piece and then open the drawers to see spray paint. EW... So I used frog tape and news paper to line the drawers and the inside of the buffet where the dust covers are. After it was sprayed I let it set really good for 24 hours and then painted it with a Benjamin Moore color called "White Cloud" in Satin. It's kind of tricky picking out a white. You don't want to have one that has a glare or a blue tint. You will get just that if you go get white off the shelf and don't let them tint it. It took about 4 coats and I lighty sanded in between.
For the top, I left the wood. I sanded it down really good with 220 grit paper on a palm sander. You don't want to use too rough a paper because it will go down into your wood.
My favorite stain is General Finishes Gel Stain. I use it on everything. I even sometimes use it on my canvas art work! It's so easy to apply because it's a gel, and when you wipe it off, the results are amazing. They have a really nice Matte Clear Poly that you brush on afterwards to seal it. I even went over the piece with Johnsons Paste Wax for a little added protection.
This piece has some sentimental value, and I hate to part with it! It helped me come up with the name Restore Interiors. BUT it's going to the shop in about and hour!! It's too deep for my dining room. So I am still on the hunt for a hutch and buffet for myself!
Thanks for letting me share! Hope ya'll have a great weekend!
I will be sharing this at Miss Mustard Seeds Furniture Feature Friday!
Blessings,
Kelli - it looks so good - what a great job! What a great job! Too much sanding for me - I hate sanding - better you than me. It really turned out fantastic.
