Cabinet Door Turned Tray

I hope that this post finds all of you well on this GREAT Saturday! It's great because we are alive another day, but it's also GREAT because my Auburn Tigers won!! WOOT! What a fantastic game!! I had to miss the most exciting part of the game to go to a fall festival for my kiddos...Boy are they loved....

I have been a busy girl today. I got up at the crack this morning for my weekly garage "sailing" and found more things than I really needed to bring home, but I had so much fun doing it! I need to slow down just a little or my Husband may end up calling "Clean House" on me. And I'm not sure I want Neasy up here, all in my business! I clean out the garage just to clutter it back up again. Whew! It's a vicious cycle......

So, I promised yesterday a project using old discarded cabinet doors. These old white doors were on my parents bathroom cabinet when I was growing up. Why my parents saved them, I have NO idea but I'm glad they did! So don't throw your old doors out, they make great serving trays!! Check this out... Ugly little things aren't they.....

But look at em' now!!

I took all of the hardware off the doors and sanded it down really good to get all the old paint and raised wood settled down. I then took my favorite Elmers white wood filler and filled in all the holes. After it dried, I sanded it some more to get a smooth paint service. Then I sprayed it with my favorite Zinzer 1-2-3 primer. I wanted to try this faux finish on the tray first to see if I liked it before I tried it on furniture. It turned out looking like real wood! It's a really cool effect.

Don't you just love this old brown bottle. Mom and I are collecting these. I wanted to show you the bottle but also get a close up of the tray finish. Do you see how it actually looks like wood grain? Super Easy. All I did was use my favorite stippling brush and dry brush some black artist acrylic on. Now, I use these paints because I have them for my Canvas art but you could use any black paint. You brush it on in the direction wood grain would go. On top of that I just started layering burnt umber with the Stippling brush until I achieved the desired effect. I left a little of the white showing through.

The lighting in this picture isn't really good for some reason but I wanted you to see the full tray with nothing on it. I drilled holes in the sides and fitted it with regular old cabinet door hardware. I chose silver because I thought it looked the best. I thought this would look great with some block cheese and grapes in the center. Although, you would probably want to line it first with something before putting food on it.

I think I'm going to try a light gray and white finish on the second one with oil rubbed bronze handles. What do you think? Not bad for something that was about to go to the trash! And the great thing was it was FREE! I already had the hardware and paint!!
