Well, today, all that really wants to come out of my mouth is WOW!!! I cannot believe how awesome ya'll are. I owe a SPECIAL, SPECIAL thank you to my new bloggie friend Marian over at Miss Mustard Seed for sending most of you guys here. For those of you who don't know, I was given the honor of being featured in Miss Mustard Seeds Furniture Feature Friday for my Buffet. If you have not been over there yet, please go check it out. Thanks to all of you who became a follower and for those of you who left the sweet comments. I wish I could reply to every single one of them but there were so many, I'm afraid I would need one of those doughnut seats from sitting in this chair all night. You guys really are awesome.....
Well, some of you may remember these ugly old frames I picked up at the Salvation Army a couple of weeks ago. I have seen all over the Southern Boutiques, these precious frames with Silk ribbon and rhinestones. They want an astronomical amount of money for them and I just knew I could make my own somehow.
I think they turned out really great! The best part about this project is I already had the ribbon the rhinestone buttons and the paint. They ended up only costing 99 cents a piece!! Sweet!! Isn't this ribbon so pretty! Someone actually wrapped a gift for me with this ribbon and I have been saving it just for something like this. The centers are vintage buttons or clip on earrings without the clip. I just pulled it off. I pick these up every time I see them at garage sales and throw them in a ball jar. You can use them for many different projects. They look lovely on pillows as well.
I love Vintage Brooches. I think they would also look lovely on this project depending on their size.
So do you want to know how I got this great finish?? Super Duper Easy and only took me about 30 minutes. I paint on canvas too so I have a lot of that type paint laying around. This is what I used but you could absolutely use craft paint.
The first thing I did was to spray the frames with a Chocolate Brown base. I used a Rustoleum paint, again, because that's what I had. You could use any chocolate brown paint.
After the first base coat dried, I took a big glob of white and mixed it with just a dab of burnt umber. It gives a whitey gray color as you can see below. I like to use a stippling brush to apply. Put a dab on your brush and wipe the excess off on some paper before you start, just to make sure you don't get a big blob on your frame. Dry brush this on until you achieve the look you want. If you get too much you can wipe off with a dry paper towel. After this dried, I took a 220 grit sanding block and sanded down some of the edges just to give it a little more depth and definition. Just play with it until you like the result. And that is it! As far as the bow, I just hot glued it on and put the buttons or earrings in the center. All done!
Make sure you come back tomorrow! I'm going to show you what to do with some old discarded cabinet doors. Have a fantastic Friday night!

Hi Kelli!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on all the new followers and the kudos for your great projects! Marian is awesome, and I'm glad she let us all know about you!! I love what you've done with these frames!! Just beautiful...and easy...and frugal - right up my alley!
Looking forward to seeing your cabinet door project - I have a few of those hanging around the studio patiently waiting for me to do something fabulous with them :o)
Have a great weekend!

I love repurposing frames. I'm made several but haven't blogged about them. If I ever get my birmingham grandkids' rooms done, I'll feature some I've done (we're going up next weekend to start on the baby's room).
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
Judy
what I mean by getting the baby's room done is that I have several frames I've done for his room that I'll show....this makes no sense...need to get off the computer and get some rest!
ReplyDeleteThank you Becky for your kind words and for coming over to see me! I hope you have a great weekend as well!
ReplyDeleteJudy- You crack me up! You totally made sense:) I knew what you meant! Have a great time with your family and please pull our Tigers through!(The Auburn ones that is..(wink,wink)

I'm a new follower sent by Marian. What a great idea with the frames! I love the bow and the touch of bling in the center. They would make wonderful Christmas, birthday or wedding gifts. I adore the red bow and that will be nice and festive for the holidays. Thanks, Kelli, for the inspiration! You have a wonderful blog. I hope you're having a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks you guys for stopping by! I am trying to check out each of your blogs as I get the chance!! I appreciate the comments...I do read each one of them!
ReplyDeleteHugs!!
Hi Kelli,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!! I've been away from the blog world for a few days while on vacation and couldn't wait to take a peek at some of my favorites. When I saw the picture of your buffet, I thought..."I know that buffet". I know you were thrilled when you saw Miss Mustard Seed picked your project. It was muched deserved, but the picture really doesn't do it justice, it's even more beautiful up close and personal!
I'll be back at the shop Monday, hope to see you then.
Joyfully,
Elizabeth Ann
That's a very great way to add a little life to frames! You can apply them particularly during the holiday season. I'll definitely want to try this one for autumn! =D
