We scored a beautiful hotel off of Priceline, which I highly recommend, both Priceline and the hotel.
We are at The Madison, a beautifully updated lap of luxury that we were able to get for 100 dollars a night.
We didn't last very long on Saturday, the day of the event. It was scorching outside and you could not move anywhere. Girl scouts were everywhere and all of the museum lines were ridiculous. We went and viewed the memorials which were very moving. On the lawn of the Vietnam war memorial were several articles put down by family members. This one was particularly moving for me. I imagine the hat belonged to the fallen soldier.
The architecture inside and outside of the buildings was amazing. The marble was exquisite. This picture was taken of the ceiling in the National Museum of Art.
I was constantly looking up today. These pillars are part of the National Archives building. What an amazing treat to see the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution in person. Not just those two, but the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights and others. I was completely shocked at how much history I have forgotten.
and this......
But hopefully after we are done, it will be a trip that they will remember for a lifetime. Tomorrow is our Capitol Tour and pictures with our Senator. It should be a fun day!
What a fun trip!!

I have another girlfriend who was at the Girl Scout event with her daughter and she too said it was hot! Fun to see the Declaration, etc... I know what you mean, you don't realize how much we "forget" until you're there seeing it all! Hope you have a safe trip home!!

Just found your site through MMS. I'm from DC (although moved now) and just did a post of things to do in DC off the beaten track. If you're still there, check out these sites. They may have less people... http://marquissclan.blogspot.com/2012/05/you-can-take-girl-out-of-city-but-can.html
ReplyDeleteHave a great time. It's a great city and worth another trip when there are less people there.
Try a 22 hour drive with 5 kids and pregnant with the 6th - and I was the only adult. Fun times! LOL! D.C. is fantastic! I took my oldest son a couple of years ago and it was great! We went in February and the lines were pretty much nil. With 60* weather, it was awesome! If you get a chance, the Marine Corps Museum is unbelievable. Its down the road a ways, in between D.C. and Quantico. It was one of my favorites that we visited - although your girls might be bored to tears. ;)
ReplyDeleteHopefully not too hot for you tomorrow! We do 12 hour driving trips every other year with my kids to Utah. I highly recommend a Minivan and movies. What a great experience for your girls, even if they only get a little out of it, being exposed to some of the most important things in our nation's history will stay with them forever. Thanks for sharing!
